As part of our focus on Operational Excellence, SSR Mining submitted an operational challenge at the Unearthed Vancouver hackathon in September 2017. The challenge was presented to a diverse range of innovators and entrepreneurs from British Columbia, sourced by the Australian innovation group Unearthed Solutions. The challenge related to predictive maintenance on shovels and haul trucks and was aimed to predict failure events before they occur. Such failure events tend to cause significant down time and losses for the mining industry in general. SSR Mining provided extensive data sets from its Marigold mine shovels, trucks and maintenance systems to the participants for the 54-hour event.
More than 16 teams participated in the hackathon. The winning team undertook the SSR Mining challenge and derived a prototype mechanism, using machine data, to predict when key components will fail days before the actual failure event. This could provide SSR Mining with better analytics to improve production and maintenance performance, reduce associated costs and leverage our big data to further optimize our operations.
Unearthed connects an international community of talented innovators to some of the most exciting challenges faced by the resources industry. Entrepreneurs and innovators come together to work on proprietary industry data to develop prototype solutions to resources industry problems. The Unearthed platform globally connects over 3,000 innovators to a range of resource industry challenges via online competitions and in-person hackathon events.
